You can Paint your own Canvas

The Situation of Filipino Children and Young Persons …

canvas of society, filipino children today, situation of young persons
The Situation of Filipino Children and Young Persons

We rarely notice them … well, some of us would, but not many of us!

In the Philippines, close to one [1]  out of every three individuals live below the poverty line, while the country itself is in full economic expansion.  Although this is encouraging for the future, the present situation remains bleak for a great many households.

A canvas such as this : a great painter JOEY VELASCO’s “Kambas ng Lipunan” is actually a very common scenario; yet, rarely would we take our eyes and heart on them on the streets, and so touchingly, even within our own classrooms.  Not many of us would have the capability to identify who among our pupils/students are suffering from mental & health problems among other sorts of difficulties.

With the hope of opening our “sensitivity to the needs” of those who do not have all the strength and capability to speak up and to be bold and brave to ask for our help, may we now GRAB THIS OPPORTUNITY to make ourselves AN AGENT of CHANGE so that the less fortunate Filipino Children and Young Persons will not remain marginalized.

So, SHALL WE NOW TAKE THE CHALLENGE of PAINTING OUR OWN CANVAS? … why not?

Post your own canvas now and be THE JESUS in the midst of those needy souls who are looking up to us for relief. How then would your canvas be?

  1. I have a great symphaty with the young ones especially the street children that I saw in the street. My heart is crying everytime I saw them. I pray for them and I thank God for giving me a chance to help them. As of now God gave me a chance to share the word of God every Friday I have an outreach in DSWD.God is really really good. Maybethis is the answer to my prayer. Thanks to the help of Holy Spirit who always guide and teach me. Good thing is I can directly pray for them. The canvas that chose is the clothesline hanging wiyh different clothes. It represents the children with different character and personality. If we patiently take care of them ,when they already clean and dry, then will go in their destination with dignity and values in life.

  2. What a realization. . .how blessed I am and how good God is in my life.

As i watched the video about Canvass ng Lipunan, dami ko na-realized. . . Dami kong hinanakit, dami kong gusto. Kaya di ko nakikita na i’m too much blessed with God, the people and things around me.

Kaya, ayun it makes me dream and dream na makuha ang ninanais ko.

In MY OWN SIMPLE WAY, I CAN MAKE A BIG DIFFERENCE. Sabi nga TO TEACH, IS TO TOUCH LIVES FOREVER. Be an INSPIRATION to your students and if they are lack of something, kung kaya nating punuan, punuan natin. Di naman tayo gagastos sa pagyakap sa kanila, sa pag-encourage sa kanila, sa pagsasabi na mahal natin sila, sa pagtapik sa balikat nila, sa pagpuri pag may nagawa silang tama, sa pagtutuwid sa kanilang mga mali, at kahit pa pakainin mo sila, it is just a cent, compare mo sa magiging bunga nito sa buhay nila.

We, can be the salt and the light of those little angels. Don’t waste your opportunity to haelp. Be a blessing.

  3. In my own little way I do have a canvas of my own… but it’s not about a canvas of literal food being fed to people hungry on material food. It is rather a canvas portraying a lady feeding young learners with spiritual food. I remember a verse Amos 8:11 Look ! the days are coming, declares the Sovereign Lord Jehovah, When I will send a famine into the land, Not a famine for bread or a thirst for water, But for hearing the words of Jehovah…. Sad to behold the days of this great famine, characterize by increased crimes, and moral breakdown. Not to mention the fact that great calamities are happening all over the world. Earthquakes, great flood and typhoons. All these will shaken us… but a person who fears the True God and makes Him his refuge will have real security. This is the time that everyone must draw close to God as the day of his deliverance is fast approaching.

I hope I can compose it again..very similar to the first one which I’ve lost just now… I remember a verse from the bible… at Amos 8: 11 it says..”Look! the days are coming declares the Sovereign Lord Jehovah, When I will send a famine into the land, Not a famine for bread or a thirst for water, But for hearing the the word of God… I made a canvas in my E portfolio depicting a Lady feeding young learners with food… not material food to sustain the body.. but spiritual food to sustain a craving soul…Today we can see that there is moral breakdown world wide as prophesied at 2 Tim 3:1-5. Not only that worst attitude among people will be dominant in the last days, likewise, different calamities will be visible.. strong earthquakes, typhoons and flood. Extra ordinary diseases with no cure will cause great fear that will make everyone wonder what might gonna happen in the future. Timely spiritual food is very much needed. On situations like this only God is our great refuge.

GREAT CONCEPT Ma’am Lou … TIMELY SPIRITUAL FOOD could be one great element that we should have in our Canvas! How we would creatively place it “in there” will manifest deep significance which would make a lot of difference. 🙂

  5. When I watched that video my heart really cried and wanted to shout wishing that I am millionaire so that I could buy hectares of lot to build a house and school and let those less fortunate children live and give free education. I keep on telling son not to waste food kasi maraming bata na di kumakain dahil wala silang pambili.

I am so grateful and thankful to our Almighty God where I am now and what I have now at yun ay sa pagsisikap ko ang pagdarasal.

: ( because I am still fixing challenges I have in my family.

  6. Nakakalungkot talaga isipin ang mga pangyayari, mga katotohanan pangyayari sa lipunan, na ang mga nasa nagtatrabaho sa goberyerno parang hndi binibigyan pansin,sa mga balita nalalaman natin ang million million niwaldas kung iyon sana ay binibigay sa mga mahihirap wala sana mga bata sa lansangan na akala nga natin na nakapanood sa kanila ay sanay na sila, pero kahit ganoon may mga pangarap sila sa buhay, masaganang pagkain, magandang damit,makapag-aral,sa madaling salita marangyang buhay, may magulang na responsable..Ang buhay na isang bata ay nagdedepende sa taong bumubuhay at nag-aalaga sa kanya.suwerte suwerte lang eka nga..kaya tayo kahit anong katayuan estado sa buhay ntin accountable tayo maraming paraan para matulungan sila lalo na tayo teachers we have a canvas to educate with them, may malaking bagay tayong magagawa they are out of school usually we teach them livelihood program sa mga magulang nila, and literacy for the children, sana magagawa ko talaga dito i remember when i was in college, before we go to the different school, my professor assigned practice teachers to the remote areas,i and my four classmates went there in Sitio Panso Sogod So. Leyte,, mga mangyan na tao, there i can see many children na uhaw sa edukasyon doon ko natutunan at narealize kung gaano kahalaga ang edukasyon lalong lao na when we teach them cooking those parents but one 62 yrs old approach us na turuan daw namin sya kung paano magsulat ng kanyang pangalan hindi namin sya naintindihan sa una dahil iba salita nila but she explain us by through action at doon para natutunaw ang puso ko, nabuhayan kami ng lakas ng loob kase noong una hindi nila kami pinansin gumawa kami ng paraan para mapansin nagpakain kami pero pag ubos na ang pagkain nagsipag uwian na, pero yon si lola Maming talagang malakas ang loob nya..kaya ayon unti unti namin sya naturuan at dahil nga eh matanda na sya ang tagal 120 hours namin every saturday kulang pa nag extend pa kami ng oras dahil sa kanya at bago sya natoto magsulat…napakasarap ng pakiramdam, ang feeling namin noon kami ang bida at sikat…

  7. It was a blessing when I watched the film. We can do many things without God (acquire wealth…start a business…get an education…etc.), but only in God’s will can we find true joy, fulfillment, faithfulness…whatever problems, suffering, hardship we encountered there is GOD willing to give everything, because he tried it already he died for us he gave himself to saved us from our sins God did not allow us to suffer but God allowed us to become a better person and expect someday to hear from Him… “Well done, good and faithful servant.”

  8. The canvass that I wish I could post here is a HAPPY KID. No matter how much my heart desires to help ALL the needy children out there, I just practically can’t do it. But doesn’t mean I can’t do anything to help them at all.

God has led me to this kind of profession. This is the easiest way I can be an agent of change to less fortunate children and young persons. I can start from one kid, then two, then three till I eventually help an entire class maybe. I don’t know how many children I can possibly help but if helping them is going to be my passion, I can probably help a hundred of them or more every school year.

I makes me excited to see countless happy kids in the future knowing I am one those who touched their lives and wish them nothing else but happiness.

  9. The canvas that I wish to paint is a child whos hands are cuffed in chains of pains, loneliness and dealings in his life. He represents the children who are lost and alone in this big wide world,,, who, at their very young age are going through a lot yet they find no help.. and worst, none of us adult could hardly notice.

Around him are different images of teachers we have in our society these days, where on their faces reflect the kind of teachers they are… and another unidentified yet prominent image in a corner.

This portrait highlights the child in the midst of the naive images of teachers and the protrusive image in the corner who plays a significant role on the canvas; and on the child.

The unaffected images surrounding the child mirror one apathetic teacher who only cares about the lesson she teaches and never misses her day without getting angry; the impatient teacher who doesn’t even care to touch and look in the eyes of her students but affords to show her sweetest smiles and spends happy tete a tete with her co-teachers; the teacher-for-money teacher who comes to school each day prepared and jubilant because of what she gets from doing her job yet the names of her students she never cares to remember and finally the push button teacher who seemingly comes to school without absences, does anything and everything what her superior asks her to do but forgets her duties and responsibilities to her students.

The last prominent image in the corner is the teacher we may choose to be,,, to help this child. She is left with a choice on her hands. An opportunity to help this child so lost in his own world. To touch his life with possibilities of making it better and happier in the absence of his family and help in his community.

Maybe we can not help all the children in our range who are hungry for love, needing an attention, crying for justice, longing for a touch, seeking for a companion and looking for someone to care for them BUT, if we will only look closer,, we can also find them inside our own classroom.

Apparently, our eyes are opened… we have finished painting our own canvas… and the challenge mode is ON. Let’s not waste the opportunity that God is giving us each day to touch one soul. Let’s be the kind of teacher who is always on fire to help make a difference in our own community. Mazel tov to us all!

  10. “Canvas of the Society”, My heart felt so pained when I watched the video. It is really hurting that children are suffering because of their parents. Why did the parents let that happen to their children? What did the government do to alleviate poverty?
I realized that eventhough were poor, atleast we ate 3 times a day.I remember when I was a young I was so envy with the other young because they are rich. They can buy their needs in their studies. They can buy the things whatever they want. But me, we need to think first the food that we need to eat before the other matters. But despite of that we are happy.
Im always praying that the government will work hand on hand with that problem, so that children will not suffer. And soon they become successful.
The canvas that I want to paint is that God is embracing the child who is suffering from pain. Because I believe that God is always with us in time of pains and happiness. Or maybe a tree that is full if hope. The children is on the sides of the tree hoping that someday they will become happy and priority of their parents.

It would really hit you DEEPER.
Until now hooked pa din ako sa napanood ko and whenever I came into deep thinking, it replays again and again in my thought.
Salamat sa pagmulat ng aking mata na hindi fairy tale ang buhay pero in our own little ways we can make this life more that a fairy tale and I believe that we can move mountains if we all work together.
Sa halip na magbangayan at magsisihan tayo why not change the attitude in more positive ways. Lets help one another and let our dear LORD be the center of everything. Let us learn to listen to our fellow men, let us share our blessing and be good example to others. Lets respect one another.
We can start this with our children…… I believe that our children is the hope of our country. Imparting knowledge to them, giving them love, care and respect, molding their minds…..We can build a better world in the future….
Lets do it right! Lets do it now!

  13. I am not a painter but I really love to paint a broken vessel. God told Jeremiah, “Upon your feet! Go to the potter’s house. When you get there, I’ll tell you what I have to say.” So I went to the potter’s house, and sure enough, the potter was there, working away at his wheel. Whenever the pot the potter was working on turned out badly, as sometimes happens when you are working with clay, the potter would simply start over and use the same clay to make another pot.. It turns out, then, that the great Potter’s intention with fallen human beings was always to recreate them into the image of his divine Son. Broken, distorted and destined for death God recycles us, so to speak, in order to transform what was left for “trash into art.” The divine artist comes himself to the very center of his broken creation and begins turning misshapen human beings into exquisite and lovely works of beauty. This is why St. Paul wrote, “For we are his workmanship, having been created in Christ Jesus for good works that God prepared beforehand so we may do them.” My interpretation is that I am nothing but God with His bountiful mercy fixed our lives to be a blessing to our students. also to shapen them as we are. Little by little in every way.. God will use us.

  14. We are not God. We cannot help everyone who are in need that is beyond our reach. But if we exert some effort on looking around, we would find those needy souls. We can see them inside our classroom. Those needy souls need our help and we should not take them for granted. Because we can’t tell what will happen in the next 24 hours of our life. If can offer help, do it now.

We often see children who dresses poorly as the ones who needed help the most. But have you looked into the eyes of those other children whom you can as neat and clean and mister/miss nice guy/gal? They show us they’re happy. They laugh. They play. And yet, they cannot find the real happiness they’re looking for. Broken family, not taken care of, unloved by their family. They also needs attention. Most especially at times that they are down. They need to be loved. To feel care from others.

Teachers, we can do that! We are they second parents. If they can’t do it, WE CAN. Just give extra time and extra effort to look into those children’s eyes and see their real emotions. We can reach out for them. Share our love and care for them.

We can’t be God to help all those needy around the world. But we can be their brother/sister like JESUS that can reach out and seek help if they needed one. We just have to see ourselves as the lucky one. The lucky one that has the power to help others. And it is real. We are lucky enough being not the one in their shoes.

  16. When I watched the video my heart felt pain and it cause me to cry because I pity those children that was mentioned by the painter.Children at their young age who tells their own stories.I admire the painter because he came up with not just a beautiful painting but a masterpiece that will serve as an eye opener to everyone. Just like the children I saw in Buting everytime I went to school .Those children who ride on a jeep with their envelopes asking for money. At first I thought they are members of syndicate but as time goes by I realized their situations.I’m thinking deeply on how can I help aside from praying for them. I wish to paint these children emphasizing their happy faces and their eyes telling me that they will never lose hope whatever battles they have in their lives. I remember when I was in college ,I keep on asking myself” Do I really like to become a teacher?” and now that I am already teaching it is now clear to me that God wanted me to be a teacher because he knew that I can be an agent of change for those children I handled. It is really a challege for us teachers to handle diversity of learners. It is in our hands to bring out the best in them.

  17. I have watched the video. The video that characterized each child in the painting. It was a touching video. I was amazed because the first time I saw the painting I thought it was an ordinary picture of children but as I watched the video these children are same in the canvas. Their lives are being expressed in this video.
We are lucky to have the blessings of GOD. That we don’t experienced hunger. Many street children I encountered especially in Manila. They have to beg in jeepneys. Sometimes I gave small amount of money sometimes not, because some children as I look at them I have second thought that they might use the money for addiction, but not all. There are some that are sincere in asking for help.
I know that our government is doing their job to lessen this abandoned children in the street, We have gov’t. agencies who is responsible for this. I believed that the join force of government and PRAYERS of people we can help these children suffering from hunger. I believe that GOD has plan for them.

That short film “Canvass in our society “brought me realizations in life,,that I should be grateful enough of what I have compare to those less fortunate families and children..That film made me cry deeply..The thing that I can be sure of is to help them through prayers..and someway in giving help to my less fortunate children in my class or in school, making them feel loved. and maybe someday The best canvass that I can be proud of are the successful students of mine ..

  19. “Thank you God You gave me a great family”. That was the word came from my mouth when I watched that video. I was very sad with that kind of situation “may kumurot sa puso ko”.
Why is it happening? Because no one taught them or guide them in the right path ever since. They don’t have teachers like us, who will support and be with them in time they needed.

I have also a student with almost the same case like this, he goes to school without baon, sleepy and not in the mood. He never complete the 5 school days. Everytime I talk to him and asking why he always absent he said ” kasi po kelangan ko pang mangalakal o maglinis ng puntod para may pambili ng pagkain, wala po kasi trabaho si papa lasing lagi”.
So I told to his classmates to share something for that little boy.

The best thing that we can offer for those children facing this kind of challenges is to pray for them because PRAYER is powerful, it can move mountains, and all the hindrances coming our way will be fade away. I wanna paint a family members serving the Lord in their own church, family that inspiring to one another and family that look unto the needs of everybody.
    God bless us po…

Before I graduated in college, I was introduced to an organization that caters to the needs of children with exceptionalities. I tried to face the challenge of completing the 3-month every Sunday training and pass through different evaluations in order to join the 10-day camp with children with special needs (CSN), and I passed. Eversince 2009, I always volunteer to a 10-Day summer camp for CSN. My heart was opened to these kids eversince up until now. I continued volunteering. Aside from the annual camp, there’s also a monthly outreach activity to the different institurion/school where these kids are located, we have games, food, and gifts for them, we try our best to give and show them our love, to show them that there are people who loves them and value them as a person. From childhood, till now, we see them grow and calling our names, giving us a hi-5, hugging us, asking us when are we coming back. As always, my heart is for them, and I will always be there for them.

In our kids church, we’ve open up a class for special needs two years back. Every Sunday, we give at least one or two Sunday service/s for volunteerism before attending the regular church. Our objective is for parents to be able to come to church and bring their children with special needs to Sunday school to learn about Christ. Nothing shall prevent them knowing and embracing Christ’s love for us, not even their disabilities. At the same time, on my 12nn regular church service, I also give my time in interpreting for the Deaf attendies in order for them to understand the message. My time is what I can give, nit much of my money.

Not being financially capable, still, I managed to continuously sponsor monthly one child from a marginalized poor town in Rizal under another organization, this will support the child of the things she needs in school to finish her studies and graduate in college, it will also help the organization to continue their support to these regular kids.

Recently, just this July, I managed to organize a project in school that will help parents communicate to their kids. This will also help the community in school to communicate to our Deaf students plus awareness that we have Deaf students. All this by a regular sign language training class from July until March. Hopefully discrimination and isolation will be minimized and eventually our Deaf kids will get to enjoy school and be able to communicate not just to selected people.

If money is a problem, we can give and help others by giving our time, effort and skills to those who needs help. Again, compassion without action is useless! Let us “work the thought!”

To God be all the glory!

If money is a problem, we can give and help others by giving our time, effort and skills to those who needs help. Again, compassion without action is useless! Let us “work the thought!”

To God be all the glory!

We are inspired them with the words of the Lord na hindi sila nagiisa God is always there He will never leave us..
    Children made fearfully and wonderfully.
At ito ang aming misyon hindi man namin maibigay ang lahat kanilang pangailangan ang simpleng panalangin na may kalakip na pananampalataya ay maituturing na inspirasyon upang mas lalo silang mapalapit sa Diyos..Lord be the center of these little children..

  24. What I was thinking when I saw this paint is a “poverty” It’s one of the big issues that until know. I was so guilty sometimes if I buying things which are not that needed, I keep on buying too much foods instead of sharing it, I ‘m not contented of what I having right now, but instead pursuing to collect, select gadgets or I say what is trending nowadays. The children are the victims, they are the one who suffer with the bad intentions of the people, As I reflect” di pa huli ang lahat” We as a teacher, we can help them in our own little way. Make a change, Be the one to start with it…
