The PAPER TOWER Challenge

The Paper Tower Challenge.

Think on you feet!

How good are you at troubleshooting what you can do with a single sheet of paper?

In just five minutes, it’s absolutely necessary that you should be able to construct your own PAPER TOWER.

The challenge: without any other material, so long as you could find a flat surface to build on, you are expected to come up with the tallest free-standing structure.

Were you able to cope with the challenge?

What can you say about your TOWER?

How do you feel about what you have constructed?

What do you think was necessary to cope with the challenge? What was your measure of success?

What do this necessarily tell about Educational Planning?

Feel free to develop your own style of writing in your attempt to do your first post with Prof. Gail.

Good luck & Welcome to 2nd Semester 2014-2015!

How do you feel about what you have constructed?

What do you think was necessary to cope with the challenge?

What do this necessarily tell about Educational Planning?

      1. at first, i thought of some stuffs that would help my paper tower to stand,,,but i wasn’t able to come up with one who will help my paper tower to stand, realizing that in my life, i should have first plan and think from myself all the resources that i have within me before looking outside because i believe there is always something within me that would make my life better and successful.:)

  2. Though we are only given a short period of time to do the paper tower challenge, I did my best to create one. When I’m doing the challenge with just a piece of paper, I asked myself, How will I make this the tallest paper tower? How will I make this smooth paper stand?

Despite of my worries I made it in an artistic way and even one of the tallest before the time ends, because I’m confident that I can do it. It’s really important to develop self confidence because this is one way to meet new opportunities and help us to do or create things we truly desire.

Challenges can really make us feel alive, engaged and fulfilled.

  4. Simple but firmly can stand alone is the paper tower I made. I’m happy I did it though at first I don’t know how I can let the soft paper stand. I realized planning to create something is very important. It is necessary in achieving goals.
This activity reminds me things i must be done in my life, to think and plan first so everything will be fine.
This paper tower activity is such a good one, I’m looking forward to more enjoyable activities.

  5. at first…i thought to myself, why am i in here???…i find it silly but then, it was a really cool ice-breaker to get all of us involved with one simple task – to create a tall paper tower…yes, it was not that simple because the paper is not the sturdiest of materials to build a tower and with a time limit at that!!!…but with a little folding here and there and putting windows to make it “real”…voila!!!…a tower!!!

…for me it was a test in keeping your composure, having fun and trying your best on how to go about it…

  6. Paper Tower! Ah at first I can’t think off on how I can make this paper tower of mine stand. I said it will not, coz the air pressure is their and besides it’s only a piece of paper! But by then I realized that I can make it stand even for a short while. It reminds me about the dreams that we have, In order to fulfill this we need to be patience, hardworking and strong. The taller it is, the taller our dreams may come true. It’s not impossible that we can do it. And for that there will be no challenges anyone can cope up if we really believe in God and of ourselves. Just be strong, have faith and the rest leave it to God.

  7. From the paper tower challenge as my first activity in Educational Planning and Fiscal Management, I related this on how I see myself as a person and as a teacher with a strong belief in things that I know, what is right….can show to all that tower is highly dignified and it will leave a remarkable works of Papa Jesus….my source of strengths and inspirations.

  8. After the paper tower activity, I realized the importance of composure. Even though the time given to us was so only five minutes we are able to make our tower. I enjoyed doing the activity.
For me the tower symbolizes ourselves, we should need to have a strong foundation so that we can outdo any obstacles and hindrances that might come alone our way in fulfilling our dreams. Our faith in God is the best and the strongest foundation that anyone can have.

  10. I hope its not yet too late to comment about the Paper Tower. At first, when Prof. Montero asked our class to bring a whole sheet of yellow padpaper,I told myself “OMG!!!!first day of the semester, first subject it means first test too?”….but i was surprised when she said to make a tallest tower as we could.I don’t know what to do at first but i calmed myself and thought for a moment….After i made the Paper Tower i realized that planning to do a thing needs thorough thinking…A person must stand on his/her plan or decision, take the consequences of the plan. Keep moving!!!!!Have faith in God and never give up building big dreams for yourself and for your family…Thank u for that inspiring activity Prof.i will let my class do this….Keep on inspiring us Prof.

  11. Why paper tower? This is what I had in mind at first. Later on, I realized that this paper tower symbolizes me. That if I will not be strong enough to face the challenges, I will fall and crumple like the paper tower. Challenges in life make us strong everyday. As we face challenges, we should not forget that those challenges were given to us because God knows that we can surpass all of them. Thank you mam Gaile for inspiring me…

  12. Building a tower out of a piece of paper was a great challenge.
First of all, it kept me thinking for a while. Here, I learned that one needs to think first before making an action. Then, I needed to picture out how should my tower look like. The value of visualizing came in. Within the allotted time, I should finish a paper tower. The question is: What other materials do I need? I only have the piece of paper and nothing more. By then and there I should be able to create something out of nothing. Resourcefulness and creativity should pop out from me.

The Paper Tower Activity tested the leadership skills among us. Some towers are tall, well-built while some are short or a little bit bulky. The end products are reflections of tower-builder’s creative and innovative mind and deep-seated values. A leader is a thinker, visualizer, action maker and values-oriented.

It is not how tall we can build but how durable we can produce. Life is not just a form but also a substance.

The towers which were built have both form and substance- Ana Igloria

  13. i know its late to post my comment about the paper tower challenge, but it’s an awesome feeling to create a tower with just a piece of paper! I use to take challenges in a subtle way, but Ma’am Gail you made me take this challenge in a split second…It may not be very tall, but I was able to make it stand firm and fast. I enjoyed the activity and it reminds me of my girl’s scout motto: “laging handa”…thank u ma’am for inspiring us…I believe nothing is impossible if we humble and entrust ourselves to the Lord our God.

  14. The paper tower challenge was challenging indeed! I admit I am not good at arts and handicrafts and executing the activity without any other material except paper is mind-boggling. However, in the end, I was able to make a paper tower that can stand alone and I’m happy to have accomplished the task.

In this challenge, I realized how important it is to do careful planning and execute quick yet wise decisions. As teachers and future school administrators, there are circumstances and challenges that don’t give us the luxury of time in weighing things out. Hence, quick yet wise decision-making is the key.

Moreover, I’d like to add that in properly executing a task, one should have a clear vision/goal in mind and sufficient background on the issue/challenge posed. By doing so, one can have a good push – be confident – in completing the task at hand.

Lastly, I’ve learned that in dealing with challenges we don’t always have to look for resources outside, rather, we should do the most of what we have.

To attain a successful teaching career, one should know how to plan ahead before entering in a year-long battle at school. That’s why this course, Educational Planning will be a great help in able for me to be open to an even better future in teaching.

When I saw my paper tower standing alone, napaisip ako….na kapag plinano mong mabuti kung ano ang gusto mong gawin, mangyayari at mangyayari ito dahil ginusto mong mangyari.

  19. When Ma’am Gail told us to construct a tower made of paper, I thought it was insane. But as I was doing it, it came the essence of this activity. Ma’am Gail wanted us to think outside the box but coming up with something IMPOSSIBLE. at first, I had a little difficulty making my paper tower to stand, then I closed my eyes and saw something in the darkness. I did not know I was already planning on how to make this activity worked. Though my paper tower was not the tallest nor the strongest, I was able to make it stand on its own and I was happy about it. At first, things look Impossible but once you put your mind and heart on it, you can definitely achieve what you want.

  21. I was absent during the paper tower activity , but then, my classmates shared to me the idea of building the paper tower …. It looks like its difficult to come up with a paper tower , true enough when I tried it at home … Building a paper tower is somehow similar to creating our plans and goals in life in different aspects … It takes a lot of patience and courage to create a life that is as high and strong as you wish to do in life ….

  22. I was glad that I was able to make a paper tower as high as it should be. Facing challenges is not easy. There is always a thought to surrender immediately when we realize that it is beyond our ability to overcome. However it is better to try and fail than surrendering immediately. God promised to his children that he will not give troubles that is beyond our ability to overcome. In fact, He promised to provide grace and strength to his children to overcome trials and challenges. He is strengthening His people to trust Him in times of trials and challenges.
