Master of Arts in Early Childhood Education, Educ 111. Early Childhood Curriculum

Congratulations to you, Early Childhood Education

Teachers and Stakeholders!

Credits to you:

“All a child really needs to know, he/she could learn from YOU!”

Such honour, isn’t it?

And so, that child, whose curiosity is at the peak of gathering all the experiences he could and at the height of asking all the questions he wants to get answers from, has TO MEET YOU!

Why? … because YOU, being there in THE EARLY CHILDHOOD/PRESCHOOL Educational System, could do MORE THAN MEETS THE EYE — to “SQUARE A CHILD’S EXPECTATIONS”!

AND SO, here you are NOW, taking a Course in Early Childhood Curriculum to align, if not just “meet halfway”  with Robert Fulghum’s VISION:

“I believe that imagination is stronger than knowledge.

That myth is more potent than history.

That dreams are more powerful than facts.

That hope always triumphs over experience.

That laughter is the only cure for grief.

And I believe that love is stronger than death.”
― Robert FulghumAll I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten

“A course in Curriculum is a COURSE IN LIFE!”

Not all the answers that we could give a child could be taken from the piles of book that we may require them to have or that we’ve personally gathered to equip ourselves with answers to kids’ queries which may at times stun us!

Some of the answers that we would give them will be what we have in our PERSONAL CURRICULUM!

However we see life in its DIFFERENT SEASONS will be that same POINT OF VIEW that we would share with those innocent minds.

And so, take this CHALLENGE NOW!

Identify, define, specify, and SOUL-SEARCH with these stuff and START PREPARING your PERSONAL CURRICULUM! 🙂

1st, TRADITIONAL or PROGRESSIVIST … what IS YOUR POINT OF VIEW?

2nd, DEFINE WHO YOU ARE and the LEGACY that you want to live-by!

Create your own VISION and specify it in your MISSION!

3rd, Considering the Components of Curriculum based on the Philippine Constitution of 1987,

what AIMS, GOALS & OBJECTIVES could you personally come up with?

4th, Having inputted with the Aims of Elementary Education [Educ Act of 1982],

what do you see should be your AIMS, GOALS & OBJECTIVES as a teacher?

… what about COMING UP WITH YOUR OWN SCHOOL? [be ready for this 🙂 ]

CREATING A CURRICULUM that would BUILD LIFE can be very AMBITIOUS! — ARE YOU too?

So there, WE’VE ONLY JUST BEGUN!

Now let’s bug our imagination:

Who REALLY HAS THE TASK TO INITIALLY LEARN? .. THE KIDZ or the TEACHER?

Our POINTS OF VIEW as we go through the Seasons of Life will matter a lot as we strive to meet up and square A LIFE for the YOUNGs — but we should foremost nurture our heart and let these lines be ours too:

“I believe that imagination is stronger than knowledge.

That myth is more potent than history.

That dreams are more powerful than facts.

That hope always triumphs over experience.

That laughter is the only cure for grief.

And I believe that love is stronger than death.”

  1. I’ve started in an internal school at Peniel Christian academy for 14 years and in Christ Commission International School for 2 years. Each school is a Progressivist. And I prefer to be one because Progressivists believe that individuality, progress, and change are fundamental to one’s education. Believing that people learn best from what they consider most relevant to their lives, progressivists center their curricula on the needs, experiences, interests, and abilities of students. Progressivist teachers try making school interesting and useful by planning lessons that provoke curiosity. In a progressivist school, students are actively learning. The students interact with one another and develop social qualities such as cooperation and tolerance for different points of view. In addition, students solve problems in the classroom similar to those they will encounter in their everyday lives. Progressivists believe that education should be a process of ongoing growth, not just a preparation for becoming an adult. An obvious example of progressivism would be our class. We are in groups a lot and we actively learn through discussion. We talk about how what we read can be incorporated into our future teaching careers. We believe that teaching should be individualized, Touch each child lives through God’s foundation. The 60 character traits of Christ were at the center of the curriculum. They learn independently. Children ,as I always say were motivated and controlled by the word of God.

It’s so compelling that we have teachers like you in the academe. What you do and ‘been doing for the past years plus the funny witt that you always have is a legacy worth sharing so that others will also share your vision. 🙂

That I may have a genuine heart in teaching, and the most important legacy is what Jesus said when the disciples drove the children away from the Lord. He said, “Let the little children to come unto me.” I always wanted to lead them and bring them to Christ as the Lord did. Education is” Life” God gave us life..that we may give life to each child.

  3. In class,, while intently listening to several teachers airing their disheartening issues inside their own respective classrooms.. a sudden thought came across and prompted m to raise my hand to speak.

Teachers as we are,, geared with skills and knowledge,, experience and expertise…. are not called just to show case our know-how to impress but rather to also express what is grandeur and deeper than knowledge. We may have became succumb with hundreds of issues that are seemingly hopeless but let us always be reminded that there is NO giving-up on us. We never face our students unprepared, do we? However, if there is no way we can get into their head… there is always a way going to their heart. A child who is seemingly hopeless and uninterested in class probably doesn’t need food for his head yet but a warm hand to touch his heart.

Let us look at each child in the eyes and seek his thirst and hunger. Watch them the way we fathom the beauty of each season that comes and goes in circle with flaws and imperfections. Let us not dwell on what is not good about them but rather on what his imperfection will make us the perfect person to touch his life.

Thus I always envision,, as it is also my humble KATHERINE FLORES PRESCHOOL’S VISION that “Through a purposeful planning and carefully balanced academic and performance-based activities, KFPS students must have developed his full potentials academically, spiritually, emotionally, socially and physically to prepare him to adjust and cope with different life situations so that he becomes a self-propelling, thinking and contributing individual who is able and capable of making responsible decisions which will prepare him for the more complex demand of future life.”

Its MISSION is to provide each KATHERINEANS a quality and diverse preschool education in a safe and supportive environment were they feel accepted regardless of his disabilities and capacity to cope up yet can explore his futile imagination with various educational materials and fun-learning in-door and out-door experiences.

Our GOAL is to join the parents and the community in assisting the children to become independent, self-empowered and self-sufficient adult in the future by developing his full potentials academically, spiritually, emotionally, socially and physically to succeed and contribute responsibly in a global community, cope with life situations and the demands of formal schooling thru the acquisition of a solid academic foundation in a warm, secure and enriching environment where each child are encouraged to apply their curiosity and creativity towards solving problems and making decisions. Progress of each child must be closely monitored by constantly updating and enhancing the school’s programs to ensure that each child is able to maximize his full potentials.

  6. The first 6 years in a child’s life, the Early Childhood stage is the most crucial because it is the foundation of one’s PERSONHOOD is laid out.

As I go through this I was having throwback’s remembering the experiences that I had gone through the past years of teaching. I wasn’t a teacher by profession before and it never comes into my mind that I will be a teacher someday and have my own preschool. Like a child in their early childhood stage there are struggles and challenges but my passion and dedication keeps me striving for improvement. I can say that I have the task to initially learn from my students. Be more sensitive to their needs, understanding them and to quote what teacher Kat has said “A child who is seemingly hopeless and uninterested in class probably doesn’t need food for his head yet but a warm hand to touch his heart” we have dig deep into the hearts of each child to be able to connect with them. Seasons in life happen but it is not a hindrance to fulfill our dreams in life but to make us stronger and have a wider perspective of what is ahead of us, which we can impart to these young children.

    Our Vision
To be Model learning center where we help children achieve their highest potential which promotes each child’s creative abilities, social, emotional, physical, spiritual and cognitive development.
    Our Mission
To provide every child with a quality early childhood experience by offering an engaging curriculum. It is our aspiration that each child will develop a positive outlook towards school and understanding that we are all created unique in our own special way.
    Our Goal
We believe that it is essential to develop a good rapport with each child and parent based on open communication and mutual respect. We believe this is the foundation of a successful school experience. It is our goal that children will be a “happy learner, young achiever and acquire a lifelong love for learning during their time spent at Highfield Learning Center.

  7. Asssessing effective teaching was difficult, because exactly how pupils learn remains a mysterious subject. It is hard for me to choose what is the most effective way of teaching children. But I think it would more effective if you are going apply both traditional and progressivist way of teaching. Because there are some instances that you need to be traditonal especially in disciplining the pupils.

My vision is that ” A molder of students, who can be the future leader of the state”. My mission in life is to commit myself in teaching profession, to touch children lives, to fulfill their dreams and to live with happy and peaceful environronment.

  8. Admiration to teachers like them. It is fervently hoped that after reading your insights I’ve learned lessons from your best practices. When it comes to experience I must say am just a neophyte in our profession. On June 2015 will be my second year in my teaching profession. I feel blessed and grateful to all the people surrounds me including my MAECE family. About my point of view I prefer the combination of traditional and progressivism. For all we know Traditional Philosophies of teaching aim to traditional moral values and intellectual knowledge. We can give only of what we have therefore the teacher has the task to initially learn. So must gain knowledge and information in so much to give. However the Progressivist Curriculum considered the interest and needs of the students which focus on problem solving. As a Progressivist teacher must strive to stimulate in the classroom life in the outside world. To help develop students who can adjust to changing world and live with others in harmony.
    Vision
Beginning at the early age of the child must be cared for and given the opportunities to address the current developmental needs and prepare them for lifelong learning. Teach them to honor the good values and give respect to others. These are the instrument to community development and nation- building.
    Mission
Every child must guide and equip them to develop holistically as the most important asset of the Nation. Become human beings who love God, parents, and country. Know their basic rights and able to live in peace and harmony with all.
I want my pupils will remember me that I make a difference by touching their lives. An ordinary teacher becomes an extraordinary in their innocent eyes.
“Pupils do not care how you know until they know how much you care”
“The heart of education is the education of the heart”

And that would made me decide to continue the course plus the excellent professors that I have. Its really inspires me, Having my own school is one of my dream and putting up of this should also be making a vision visible in my careful imagination that would fit the school that I have in my mind. What kind of stydents that I want to produce. Just like other private school which is very particular in molding the character of the students. Character first then knowledge, the values and the spiritual aspect of a student. After that I would come up with my mission and my goals. Inspite of all the high technology nowadays I want my students that once in a while to be back in basic especially in everyday life because everything came from basic. Use the resources like the nature to use them instead of using the artifucial one and learn to appreciate those awesome creation of God. 10. Being a seven-year (7) preschool teacher, I can say that this kind of job plays a major role in child’s life. My role is not just limited to teaching lessons. It is also expected to make the child socialize and interact with each other. Their innocent mind is not really aware of what they will face, how they should act. In such scenario, I try to understand the emotions and feelings of the child. I find ways in overcoming their separation anxiety.
Most important is knowing individual differences, observe the strength and weaknesses to really understand them, For a child’s successful preschool experience is very much dependent on quality of the teachers. If they have been treated and taught well, they will be always be inspired to go back to school. It is the role and responsibility of a preschool teacher to instill a sense of comfort and lifelong love of learning in the child and this experience will forever stay in the lives of children as well as the teacher.
“The leader of tomorrow depends on us.“ We, as preschool teachers need to consider the starting point of their journey in life that is why our major responsibility is in our hands to mold each child holistically. Let us be as an eye opener to our children by teaching sensitively because the presence of our understanding and knowledge about the child’s behavior will make them feel that they are especial to us, teach them straight from our heart because the presence of our attachment is very much important and in relation to my point of view in choosing what exact approach may apply, I chose progressevism, this approach can really be a big help in nurturing and establishing child’s development.

    VISION
It is envisioned in providing excellent quality through valuing of play as a medium of learning and development yet affordable early childhood education services.
    MISSION
To provide a stimulating early child care development and education experience which promotes holistic development and provide a child-centered laboratory setting, programs and activities appropriate for all preschool children.
    GOALS/OBJECTIVES
    1. To support children in their play and encourage to take charge, construct and create their own knowledge.
    2. To facilitate, create and support an environment that sets for the opportunities of young children to explore and discover, plan and reflect in their experiences.
    3. To instill positive attitude toward learning.
    4. To develop positive relationship with others.
    5. To promote a good self-image and high self-esteem

  13. 1. Traditional or Progressivist. . What is your point of view?

Points of View in Traditional and Progressive Curriculum

Traditional curriculum is a teacher centered wherein the teacher served as academic instructor, source of knowledge and authority figure who design the instruction and the ready made experiences of the pupils which are from listening to recitations only. Furthermore, certain subjects train the mind of pupils and had to memorize facts as well as formulas that were never ending. They also applied the severely harsh punishment for pupils’ misconduct. Traditional curriculum develops the intellectual skills of special/ homogenous group of pupils to make them good citizens. They prepare the young for future responsibilities and for success in life by means of acquisition of the organized bodies of information and prepared forms of skills which make up the material of instruction.
In contrary, progressive curriculum is student centered wherein it offers education that centered the interest of the pupils. It provides teaching-learning modalities that cater the needs and focus in the welfare of the pupils. In this curriculum, it promotes learning through experiences wherein the pupils are working with objects/learning materials for cognitive development through direct experiences and the teacher serves as the facilitator in the interactive and discovery learning of the pupils. Furthermore, all subjects are essential to the development of pupils’ intellect wherein self-directed learning, discovery learning and cooperative work in heterogeneous groups in democratic living are being practice. In this curriculum, it gives emphasis on the development on the “whole child” approach that blends psychological, social, and cultural well-being of the pupils.

  16. Good day!

I’m a PROGRESSIVIST teacher. I believe that “If a child can’t learn the way we teach, maybe we should teach the way they learn.” It’s true that we cannot teach the child the way we were taught before. In our time, if we couldn’t learn the lesson we have no choice but to learn it in any way or else we we’re ended up being punished by the teacher. Learning in our time was very traumatic and painful. And I won’t let my pupils experience that kind of feelings. I want them to have a fun-filled learning experience by:
    – allowing them to explore everything around them,
    – promote interactive learning,
    – help children achieve social, emotional, linguistic, physical, and cognitive goals,
    – encourage development of positive feelings and dispositions toward learning while leading to acquisition of knowledge and skills,
    – promote feelings of safety, security, and belonging,
    – provide experiences that promote feelings of success, competence, and enjoyment of learning,
    – promote positive relationships with families and society
    – and most importantly to be a God loving person.

    VISION
To produce pupils equipped with skills necessary for the development of the more complex task, have a positive attitude towards self, family, society and to God.

    MISSION
Inspires, motivates, and maintain an environment of growth, challenge, and unlimited potential for all pupils by providing genuine education.

  17. Points of View in Traditional vs. Progressive
Some people say “out with the old and in with the new “. Some people love their culture intact without external influences. This is the same with traditional and progressive views of curriculum. Traditional views gives importance to the cognitive development of the leaner while Progressive view is the actualization of all the information that they learn and apply them in the real life situations. Progressivism was born out of the traditional view which means they are related. Its like a cellphone that got upgraded and contained new features while Progressive view is like a new software installed on the traditional that makes it work better and even more effective. 18.
Old one has been tested for many years while new one can be said as adhering to the change. They work as a very good combination for the betterment of the students and teachers. 20. Without a vision people perish. The mission of vision is very important. It is what reminds educators of why they started teaching and what their goal they need to achieve everyday. I never really thought about what my mission as a teacher is and never realized how important it is. Teaching is a difficult but rewarding profession. But now, I believe that teachers need a goal to strive for to keep them going and also as a reminder of why they are there.
    VISION:

If I were to choose between traditional and progressive education, I’d choose the latter. As a kindergarten teacher, I think I am a progressivist one. What I do inside my classroom is that, I let my pupils actively participates in every activities. I am not just there as a source of information for them, but I facilitate, guide and involve my pupils with everything that needs to be done inside the classroom. I want my pupils to experience fun in learning and think that school is fun, exciting and interesting. This is the legacy that I want to live by. 25. Goals:

My dream as a teacher is to build my own school. I’ll use my knowledge, skills, expertise and values in life as a foundation. Teaching is a vocation but, owning a school can also give me financial freedom and stability which will enable me to do greater things.
I believe that with power comes great responsibility. And my greatest dream is to be able to give back. Through my school, we will give back to the community and hopefully, they may carry with them the virtue of compassion and giving when they leave. I believe that our lives can only have its full meaning when we give back.

    Traditionalist or Progressivist

They say that change is inevitable. And this is true now more than ever. With new studies and changes in technology and the field of education, it is our responsibility as teachers to be updated. Even taking further studies is coping with change. So I would say I am a Progressivist. But, I always bear in mind the things I learned traditionally because it is my foundation.

  29. I am a PROGRESSIVIST teacher!
It has often been said that it takes time to educate a child.Yes its true!I believe that children learn from watching others, working with others, and experiencing first hand the whole domain of learning. Most children are eager to learn new things. Children are in the discovery mode and must be allowed to experience the relevancy of learning. We all know that our pupils learn better in a controlled environment where rules are few and simple. I noticed that occupying children’s minds and keeping their hands busy will make the teachers whole day very smooth and easy.

    VISION
Provide children with a happy, safe, and nurturing environment where we inspire to foster total development individualized to your children’s needs.

    MISSION
Our mission is to take advantage of the teachable moments that happen every day by fostering the intellectual, creative, social, emotional, and physical growth and development of pupils and to inspire a lifelong commitment to learning.

    OBJECTIVES
    1. Experience the joy of learning.
    2. Enlarge creative skills and enjoyment through experiences with art materials, music, building and play.

    VISION
The school offers a nurturing environment that encourages the students to explore, learn and succeed.
    MISSION
The school together with the community collaborates to teach academics, social emotional and problem solving skill.

    PHILOSOPHY
Based on what I observed each child is a unique individual who needs a secure, caring and stimulating atmosphere in which to grow and mature emotionally, intellectually, physically and socially. It is my desire as a educator to help students meet their fullest potential in these areas by providing an environment that is safe, supports risk-taking, and invites a sharing of ideas. When the teachers’ role is to guide, providing access to information rather than acting as the primary source of information, the students’ search for knowledge is met as they learn to find answer to their questions. For students to construct knowledge, they need the opportunity to discover for themselves and practice skills. Providing students access to hands-on activities and allowing adequate time and space to use materials that reinforce the lesson being studied creates an opportunity for individual discovery and construction of knowledge to occur.

or even how much you know.
      It’s being able to differentiate
between what you do know and what you don’t.
It’s knowing where to go to find out what you need to know
and it’s knowing how to use the information you get.

  33. I believe that teachers and students learn both.. And teachers learn by teaching..

    Students’ behavior
The students work intensively at home, because the quality of the classroom discussion (collective intelligence, emergence) depends closely on the students’ (“the neurons”) preparation. Students who are not prepared or who are often absent are not able to react to impulses or to “fire off” impulses themselves.
The students sit in a circle. Each student listens with concentration to the other students and asks questions if something in the explanations is not clear.
The teaching students introduce the new content in small portions to their peers (for example, relevant scenes from Dom Juan) and they repeatedly ask questions in order to check if everything is clear

    Teacher’s behavior
The teacher (“the frontal cortex”) has to perfectly master the content because he or she must be able to intervene at any time, completing or giving incentives in order to enhance the quality of classroom discussion.
The teacher looks for absolute quietness and concentration during the explanations by students, so that each student may explain their thoughts without being interrupted and so that other students may ask questions of the student giving the lesson.
The teacher observes the communication and intervenes if something is not clear. The teacher continues to let the students clarify what they have said if meaning or content are not completely clear.
These are the example of how students and teachers learn…

  34. What is my goals, aims, and objectives as a teacher?
…My aims and goal as a teacher is to respects students. In a great teacher’s classroom, each person’s ideas and opinions are valued. Students feel safe to express their feelings and learn to respect and listen to others. This teacher creates a welcoming learning environment for all students.
Creates a sense of community and belonging in the classroom. The mutual respect in this teacher’s classroom provides a supportive, collaborative environment. In this small community, there are rules to follow and jobs to be done and each student is aware that he or she is an important, integral part of the group lets students know that they can depend not only on me, but also on the entire class.
To be warm, accessible, enthusiastic and caring. To be approachable, not only to students, but to everyone on campus. This is the teacher to whom students know they can go with any problems or concerns or even to share a funny story. To have a good listening skills and take time out of their way-too-busy schedules for anyone who needs them. If this teacher is having a bad day, no one ever knows—the teacher leaves personal baggage outside the school doors.

My objectives is can “shift-gears” and is flexible when a lesson isn’t working. To assesses my teaching throughout the lessons and finds new ways to present material to make sure that every student understands the key concepts.
While teaching is a gift that seems to come quite naturally for some, others have to work overtime to achieve great teacher status. Yet the payoff is enormous — for both me and my students. Imagine students thinking of you when they remember that once they had a teacher with a heart..

    The Vision and Mission
I believe that school is an extension of the home, designed to reinforce the faith and values of the parents. I believe that policies and procedures governing the school should be consistent with the standards of the Bible, which is God’s inspired Word. I believe that this is God’s world, that each child is unique in God’s sight, created in His image to live a life of faith and service.
I believe that faith in Christ must be applied to all areas of life, that God’s Word has the answers to individual and world problems. As an educational institution, our goal is to present Christ in all subject matter and in so doing have each child develop a world life view with Christ as the focal point.

  37. 1st, TRADITIONAL or PROGRESSIVIST … what IS YOUR POINT OF VIEW?

There are times that I am traditional but most of the time I am progressivist most especially that we are now in the 21st century..We need to consider both the traditional and progressivist in our teachings it is because in a classroom, a diverse student could be found. As a teacher you must fit your teachings to the needs of everyone in your class. All were not the same, you need tactics so that your students can absorb what you taught and can apply it within their lives for them to survive and to be competitive enough in this struggling world.. That is why, whatever curriculum we are going to choose the important thing is that your students are going to learn.

2nd, DEFINE WHO YOU ARE and the LEGACY that you want to live-by!

We know, when we go into teaching, that the consequences of our work may not be entirely appreciated in the moment, that we are “planting seeds” as a teacher of mine told me when I was becoming a teacher. Yes, there are some days when we leave the classroom KNOWING that we made a difference. We saw the light bulb go on. We heard or watched as a student responded in a new way. But honestly, we do not always know the students who will be truly moved by our work or who will come back years later to tell us how the seed we planted eventually blossomed.

I believe that all of my students deserve to receive the same attention and learning experience. I believe that in order to give the best quality of teaching, I have to continue to learn about technology and how it can be used in the classroom. I must also continue to brush up on teaching and learning skills by attending workshops and conventions as well as researching them. I believe that along with perfecting my skills I need to show my students that I care about them as people.
I believe that students need to be shown how to become leaders. I can show them this by providing them with a great learning environment, one that will allow them to find their God-given talents, which will then allow me to teach them how they can use them in a positive way, such as helping fellow classmates with problems they are good at solving.
I want my colleagues and students to remember me as caring, loving and someone who would never quit on bringing out the best in them.
